Solders for Hard Soldering (brazing) are only used with a torch
The terms Extra-Soft, Soft, Medium, Medium-Hard, & Hard are used to describe the relative temperature flow points between one type or more specifically, one brand of hard solder. Extra Soft will have a lower flow point than Soft, which will have a lower flow point than Medium, which will have a lower flow point than Medium-Hard. Extra Hard will have the highest flow point temperature. This labeling system is used for most brands of solders. but not that there are differences between manufactures, so one brand of medium solder could flow at a different temperature than another brand of medium solder.
Plumb solders are used with a torch while hard soldering (brazing) in the making of gold jewelry and contain the same gold content as the work they are recommended for. Use gold plumb solders for the creation and manufacturing of jewelry.
Repair solders are used in hard soldering jewelry repair work performed with a torch. Gold repair solders have a lower gold content than the work they are recommended for. This is so the repair solder should flow first-before other solders flow that are used in a manufactured jewelry item.
