*When a file is called a Swiss Pattern File it means that the shape, size and cut is based on a standard of files made in Switzerland. A file can be called Swiss Pattern, but that does not mean that it is made in Switzerland. There is only one Swiss File Manufacturer, Usines Metallurgiques de Vallorbe (UMV) based in Vallorbe Switzerland. Genuine Swiss made Swiss Pattern Files are sold under the brand name, Glardon-Vallorbe, and will have Swiss Made and the UMV logo of a fish marked on the file. Swiss Pattern Files have three basic names, Precision Files, which are generally larger files, Needle Files, which are generally miniature sized files and Escapement files, which are even smaller than Needle files and are also called Watchmakers files.
American Pattern Files are based on the shape, sizes and cuts of files once made in the USA.  There are no more file manufactures producing files in the USA. American pattern files are also called machinist files or engineers files.

#4 cut files

I am a tool maker, and the files I bought years ago have worn out, these are somewhat wider than the pillars files I had so I will have to get used to the difference, at first use they seem to be just as good as the ones I got from Switzerland so many years ago. I use them for strictly finish work so they are too sharp right now so I'll have to "wear them in" with some extended use, so far good product, I only wish they had come in a narrower width.

Hi Richard, we do have the same genuine Swiss Made files that used to be marked Grobet Swiss. You may find the width you are looking for from our selection of Glardon-Vallorbe Swiss Made Pillar files. The Italian files aren't bad of course, but you can still buy the same file 'you use to' as the only thing that has changed (in North America that is) is the brand name. Search for 'pillar files' or for 'Glardon-Vallorbe pillar files'. We have 5 different widths of genuine Swiss Made Pillar precision files, and some Flat Hand and Equalling files that are very similar. Thanks!
