Product Details

Made in the USA by Liza Nechamkin in small batches, Nechamkin Organic Pine Rosin Green Chaser's Pitch follows the proven formula developed by metal sculptor Debra Montgomery. This natural, pine-based pitch is favored by blacksmiths, sculptors, armorers, and jewelers for medium to high relief work. It can be worked slightly warm with a heat gun; keep it slightly warmer for deeper repoussé and slightly cooler for crisper planishing. In cold conditions, the pitch will release the metal.

Features

  • Organic pine rosin formulation: Traditional pitch feel—adhesive when cool, pliable when warmed.
  • Balanced working range: Tunable with light heat for medium to high relief; cooler temperatures provide firmer planishing support.
  • Studio-made quality: Mixed in small batches in Nechamkin's studio using the licensed Debra Montgomery recipe.
  • Generous quantity: Sold as a 5 lb (2.2 kg) tub—enough to fill a standard pitch bowl with extra for replenishing.

How Much Do I Need?

  • An 8" × 4" pitch bowl typically requires approximately 5–7 lb depending on whether you prefer the surface mounded or flush.

Basic Use

  1. Place pitch in a suitable pitch bowl and warm gently—many shops use a 250–300 °F oven for even softening.
  2. Seat your work while the surface is pliable; allow to cool until firm before striking.
  3. To remove, re-warm slightly so the piece lifts cleanly; wipe away residues while warm.

Notes

  • This is a natural product; minor batch-to-batch variation in color and firmness is normal.
  • Avoid heating pitch to the point of bubbling or smoking.
  • Always wear eye protection when working with hot pitch and ensure adequate ventilation.
