Renaissance wax is used to produce a barrier that excludes moisture and oxygen from metal surfaces. This ensures against further introduction of contaminating elements by handling, and to provide a protective layer over anti-corrosion undercoatings. Renaissance wax is very stable, and is used extensively in antique restoration and museum curation. Jewelers can use it to keep their creations looking clean, bright and new for a long time. For best results, apply renaissance wax very sparingly.
I had my front door hardware (brass) restored and polished several years ago. After polishing it, the restoration company used Renaissance microcrystalline wax to protect the metal from tarnishing, and they recommended that I recoat it with the wax every few years. The brass finish is still bright and untarnished after 3 years of exposure to the elements and after my touchup recently with a bit more wax it should continue to stay nice and bright.
It takes very little wax and it's very easy to rub on and buff to a nice polish. One small jar will probably last a lifetime!
