Un tasso in acciaio offre una superficie dura e piana contro cui ribadire, appiattire, raddrizzare e modellare i metalli al banco da orafo. Questi tassi in acciaio di qualità sono realizzati in acciaio per utensili EN31 ad alto tenore di carbonio, rettificati fino a risultare lisci e piani, quindi temprati a 46-50 Rockwell. Offrono una base solida e stabile per lavori di ribaditura, appiattimento, raddrizzatura e modellazione.
