Description
Zinc-free eutectic silver solder is the piece you reach for when a joint has to survive an enameling firing without spoiling the enamel. Commonly known as IT solder, it is formulated specifically for enameling applications. Each piece weighs approximately 5 pennyweights (5 DWT, or 1/4 troy ounce) and contains 80% silver and 20% copper, with no zinc in the alloy.
Zinc can cause bubbling and surface defects when solder comes into contact with enamel during firing, which is why eutectic silver solders are the professional standard for enameled metalwork. The eutectic composition, silver and copper only, removes that risk and makes this solder the reliable choice wherever enamel and solder may interact. The approximate flow point is 1560°F (848°C).
