Silver solder grades, Extra Soft, Soft, Medium, Medium-Hard and Hard, describe the relative temperature flow points within a solder line. Extra Soft, also called Extra Easy, flows at the lowest temperature, with each successive grade flowing at a progressively higher temperature. Generally, a higher flow point corresponds to a higher silver content, which improves color match to silver and can contribute to a stronger bond.

Flow point temperatures vary between manufacturers. One maker's Medium may flow at the same temperature as another maker's Hard, so always verify flow points when mixing solder brands.

For fabrication: Use the highest temperature (hardest) solder available so that subsequent repairs can be made with lower temperature solders without disturbing existing seams. For repairs: Use the lowest temperature (softest) solder appropriate for the job, since the solder grade used previously is often unknown.
