Part # 122.821 158 In Stock Weight -- lb -- g
Current price $6.95

Description

Borax casting flux powder controls oxidation while you melt and pour at the bench, keeping metal cleaner for better fills and fewer inclusions. Use it as a general casting flux or for crucible prep across melting and pouring ingots, general casting operations, and crucible preparation and maintenance. Sold as a powder in a one-pound (1 lb) box.

Features

  • Controls oxidation during melting and casting
  • Keeps melts cleaner and helps reduce slag and inclusions
  • Suitable for crucible prep, used alone or mixed with boric acid
  • Easy to sprinkle or spoon into the melt
  • Powder form, sold in a 1 lb (0.45 kg) box

Notes

How to use:

  1. Sprinkle a small amount of borax into the crucible before charging metal to help glaze and protect the surface.
  2. Add a pinch to the melt as needed to maintain a clean, glassy cover while heating.
  3. For crucible conditioning, coat the hot crucible interior with a light layer of borax and rotate to distribute.

Borax vs. boric acid: They are two different formulations related to boron chemistry. Borax is a naturally occurring mineral used here as a casting flux, and boric acid is a refined derivative. Both can be used during melting to help clean metal, and they may be mixed for certain shop practices, including crucible prep.

Use appropriate PPE, including gloves, eye protection, and fume management, when melting and pouring. Avoid inhalation of dust and keep the container closed when not in use. Follow your foundry and crucible manufacturer's recommendations.
