Ultralite Kiln Keum-Boo Covers (2) Red Brass

The Ultralite Kiln Keum-Boo Covers are a set of two red brass covers, each 4" in diameter, specially designed for use with the Ultra-Lite Kiln when performing Keum-Boo firing. These covers provide the controlled environment needed to achieve proper bonding temperatures for this exacting gilding technique.

Keum-Boo is an ancient Korean gilding technique used to apply thin sheets of gold to silver, creating silver gilt with a permanent, durable finish. The process begins by depleting the surface of sterling silver to bring up a thin layer of fine silver. Twenty-four karat gold foil is then applied using heat and pressure — a process known as mechanical gilding — to produce a permanent diffusion bond between the two metals.

Pure precious metals such as gold and silver share a very similar atomic structure, giving them strong bonding potential. Heating these metals to a temperature between 500–700°F increases atomic movement. When pressure is applied, an electron exchange occurs at the surface between the two metals, forming a permanent diffusion bond — one that takes place well below the soldering temperature of either metal.
