A liner graver cuts multiple parallel lines in a single stroke, and a bent shank keeps the tool and hand up off the work so the cut stays in view. E. C. Muller bent liner gravers use that bent shank geometry for improved visibility and access on curved or recessed surfaces, which makes them a practical choice for detailed engraving work on jewelry and metalwork.
Liner gravers are defined by two values: the width number (the spacing category) and the line count (number of lines cut per stroke). To determine the true width of the cut a liner graver will produce, find the width number in the spacing chart below and multiply its corresponding distance value by the number of lines.
Width Number – Distance Between Lines:
Example: A 12W × 8L liner graver produces a true cut width of 1.20 mm (8 lines × 0.150 mm). An 18W × 16L liner graver produces a true cut width of 3.63 mm (16 lines × 0.227 mm). True width refers to the width of the cut made in the metal, not the physical width of the graver itself. Measurements are approximate.
