Description
Natural Black German Pine Pitch is a harder, higher-working-temperature variant of traditional pine-resin pitch — ideal when you need an extra-firm hold for planishing, flat chasing, chiseling, and engraving. Unlike asphaltum/bitumen mixes, this is a natural pine-based formulation with excellent adhesion, clean release, and even softening when warmed. Sold in a 2 kg (4.4 lb) tub.
Features
- Harder set than German Red Pitch: Provides more rigid support for planishing and flat work.
- Slightly higher softening temperature than red pitch, yet still workable with bench-friendly heat.
- Natural pine-based formulation — not the smelly, tar-like asphaltum many shops avoid.
- Generous 2 kg (4.4 lb) tub sized for professional shop use.
How to Use
- Place pitch in a suitable pitch bowl and warm gently (typically 250–300 °F via oven or heat gun) until pliable.
- Seat your work in the softened pitch and allow to cool until firm before striking.
- To remove, re-warm slightly and lift the piece; wipe residues while warm and finish clean-up per your studio practice.

Notes
- As a natural product, minor batch-to-batch variations in color and firmness are normal.
- For deeper forming and more general work, many metalsmiths keep a medium red pitch alongside this harder black pitch.
- Well-made pine pitches should grip when cool and soften evenly — avoid overheating to the point of bubbling or smoking.
- Always wear eye and hand protection when working with hot pitch and ensure adequate ventilation in your workspace.
