Machinist files (also called Engineers files) are cheaper files used for general purpose industrial use. These are not jewelers files, having only a double cut across the diagonal and are not recommended for fine jewelry use. Machinist files have a different cut ratings than jewelers files, which are also refereed to as precision files or Swiss pattern files. Machinist files are based on an American standard, and have names like first cut (marked Bastard cut) and second cut (marked Roman numeral II cut). Bastard cut is similar to a jewelers cut 00, and Second cut is between a jewelers cut 0 and cut 1.
