This portable polariscope is designed to differentiate between singly refractive (isotropic) and doubly refractive (anisotropic) stones. By placing a gemstone between two polarizing filters and rotating the top lens, you can observe characteristic light reactions that reveal important optical properties—an essential test in gem identification.
