How to choose

• Task: Use cutting broaches to incrementally open/true; follow with a smoothing broach to polish. Choose steel burnishers for shaping/closing; agate when you need a mirror finish with minimal marking.
• Shape: Round for general bores; square/triangular to “find” corners or quickly remove material; pivot for watch stems and small precision work.
• Profile (burnishers): Straight for flats/edges, curved for bezels and channels, knife/oval for tight access and prong shoulders.
• Handling: Add a comfortable handle or pin-vise for better control on small tapers.

Technique & care

• Broaches cut on a gentle, twisting forward motion—don’t force or reverse under load.
• Use a light lubricant; clear chips often. Finish with a smoothing broach for a bright, accurate bore.
• Keep steel burnishers mirror-polished (strop on leather) so they move metal cleanly without scratching.
