Round millgrain tools are precision stone-setting instruments used to dress up and decorate stone settings with a row of small, uniform beaded impressions. The effect of these tiny, evenly spaced depressions makes a stone appear larger and brighter — a classic finishing technique favored by stone setters and bench jewelers. These round-head tools are also available in an oval shape, which is the more widely used profile.
It is important to distinguish these stone-setting millgrain tools from the larger decorative millgrain wheels used on a lathe for finishing the edges of wedding bands. These tools are extremely small and intended exclusively for stone-setting work. Each tool is marked with a size number from 1 through 15 for easy identification. The size range spans from approximately 0.35 mm (No. 1) to approximately 0.65 mm (No. 15) — a total difference of only 0.30 mm, with approximately 0.02 mm between each consecutive size. Precise measurement of these tools is inherently difficult due to their diminutive scale.
Millgrain tools are made in France and are sold individually, allowing you to stock only the sizes your work requires, or as part of a set.
