Lapis Lazuli has been mined in the mountains of Afghanistan for more than 6,000 years — these mountains are the world's oldest known commercial gemstone mines. Prized throughout history, Lapis Lazuli's vivid blue was once valued as highly as sapphire and was ground into pigment to produce blue dye long before synthetic alternatives existed.
Lapis Lazuli is technically a rock, composed of several minerals: lazurite, pyrite, and calcite in varying amounts. Lazurite provides the characteristic blue color, calcite produces white veining, and pyrite appears as gold flecks. The highest quality Lapis Lazuli displays a pure, vivid royal blue with little to no calcite or pyrite present.
These oval cabochons are cut from Denim Lapis, named for its resemblance to denim fabric. Denim Lapis displays a light to medium blue color with more prominent white calcite streaking, offering a softer, distinctive appearance that stands apart from deeper royal blue material. Denim Lapis serves as a fine alternative for the December birthstone and is well-suited for a wide range of jewelry settings.
