Goldsmithing 1: Basic Goldsmithing Techniques by Gerhard Schulze-Wahle is a rigorous, structured manual translated from German into English by Claire Selby and Michael Wonne. At 290 pages in hardcover, it is designed as a working reference for both jewelry trade instructors and students — a communications tool that bridges the bench and the classroom.
The book's 34 practical exercises are organized in strict sequential order: each chapter builds directly on the last, introducing new tools, worksteps, and design challenges only after prior skills have been established. Every new tool is cited at the opening of its chapter and assigned a reference number; full details appear in the appendix under that number. Where required, technical drawings are appended at the end of relevant chapters, with additional descriptive notes as needed. Only one method is presented per process — clean, deliberate instruction rather than a survey of alternatives.
Steve Frei reviewed this book in July 2015: "This book covers the fundamentals of goldsmithing in clear and easy to understand text. Color photos and drawings are excellent. The English translation is very natural — you don't feel like you're reading from a computer-generated translation. Chapter one covers the proper techniques for using files, measuring tools, the bench pin, and the sawframe. Chapter two builds on your skills and introduces new tools including a steel block, center punch, chasing hammer, drilling, and the use of burs in a flex shaft. You can spend hours and days learning and practicing each skill, and you have to master each skill before you move on. 34 chapters in all. Book includes a tool list as an index. All tools used in this book are available from Otto Frei. Great book at a good price. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in the proper techniques of goldsmithing."
