The Fretz HMR-104 is the largest hammer in the Fretz lineup, comparable in scale to full-size silversmith hammers from Peddinghaus. Designed specifically for embossing work, this hammer gives metalsmiths and silversmiths the mass and reach needed to dome and stretch metal efficiently on large-scale projects.
The hardened stainless steel head is polished to a mirror finish, delivering clean, consistent strikes with minimal surface marring. The rosewood handle measures 250mm (9-7/8") and is finished to an exceptional standard—balanced in hand and smooth to the touch. The head measures 101mm (4") in length and weighs 7 oz. (199g), providing the heft required for serious forming work.
About Embossing: Embossing is the stretching of metal by hammering from the inside. Bossing is a form of embossing when metal is hammered into a cavity; freeform embossing is performed with a sandbag. The large embossing hammer is used to dome metal from the inside, stretching it as it is supported on a sandbag or a depression carved in wood. Doming a piece of metal before raising makes it easier to control because the shape becomes rigid. This hammer also leaves a distinctive dimpled texture on flat and slightly domed metal when used on the outside of a form against a stake. For smaller, lighter projects, the HMR-4 Mini Embossing hammer is the appropriate choice; for larger work, the HMR-104 is the tool of choice.
