The Fretz HMR-105 Large Small Embossing Hammer is the largest hammer in the Fretz line, designed for forming small raised areas by hammering metal from the inside. Comparable in scale to full-size silversmith hammers from Peddinghaus, it features a dual-face hardened stainless steel head polished to a mirror finish and a rosewood handle with an exceptional finish that offers outstanding comfort and balance in hand. With a handle length of 250mm (9-7/8") and a head length of 101mm (4"), this hammer brings professional-grade performance to repoussé, chasing preparation, and freeform embossing work.
According to designer Bill Fretz: Embossing is the stretching of metal by hammering from the inside. Blocking is a form of embossing when metal is hammered into a cavity; freeform embossing is done with a sandbag. The small embossing hammer forms small raised areas from the inside in preparation for chasing or general shaping, leaving a very fine dimpled texture that can be varied by the strength of the blow. The HMR-105 is the large-format counterpart to the mini HMR-5 and is best suited for larger-scale work where more mass and reach are required.
