The Fretz PrecisionSmith line represents the newest generation of Fretz hammers, engineered for precise, detailed work on the finest jewelry. These super-small stainless steel hammers are smaller than the Fretz mini hammer line, featuring shorter head lengths (65mm vs. 70mm on average), smaller working surfaces, and thinner handles — all designed for refined control during intricate metalsmithing tasks.
The Fretz HMR-401 PrecisionSmith Planishing Hammer carries the same hallmarks of quality that define every Fretz hammer: highly polished, properly hardened stainless steel heads paired with beautifully finished rosewood handles. The balance is exceptional, the stainless steel surface is polished to perfection, and the rosewood handle finish feels extraordinary in the hand.
About Planishing — as described by Bill Fretz: Planishing is smoothing metal against a stake by making the blows overlap. This is a stretching technique that also forms metal to the underlying stake. The round face smooths out previous raising hammer marks, while the flat face refines those marks to a nearly smooth finish. This hammer is also used to size rings, form bezels, and perform general forming of metal against mandrels and stakes. It is the most-used hammer style in the PrecisionSmith line and by far the most popular.
