The Fretz PrecisionSmith line represents the newest evolution in Fretz hammer design — super-small stainless steel hammers engineered for precise, detailed work on the finest jewelry. Smaller than the Fretz mini hammer line, PrecisionSmith hammers feature shorter head lengths (65mm vs. 70mm on average), reduced working surfaces, and thinner handles for unparalleled control in tight, delicate applications.
The Fretz HMR-404 PrecisionSmith Large Embossing Hammer carries all the hallmarks of the Fretz tradition: a highly polished, properly hardened stainless steel head paired with a rosewood handle finished to an exceptionally sensual feel. The balance is precise, the surface is immaculate, and the ergonomics are purpose-built for the demands of fine jewelry work.
According to Bill Fretz on embossing: Embossing is the stretching of metal by hammering from the inside. Bocking is a form of embossing when metal is hammered into a cavity. Freeform embossing is done with a sandbag. The large embossing hammer is used to dome metal from the inside — the metal is stretched as it is supported on a sandbag or a depression carved in wood. Doming a piece before raising makes it easier to control because the shape becomes rigid. The embossing hammer also produces an interesting dimpled texture on flat and slightly domed metal when hammering on the outside of a form against a stake.
