The Fretz PrecisionSmith line represents the newest evolution in Fretz hammer design — engineered for precise, detailed work on the finest jewelry. PrecisionSmith hammers are smaller than the Fretz Mini hammer line, featuring shorter heads (65mm vs. 70mm on average), smaller working surfaces, and thinner handles. Despite their compact scale, they retain the same highly polished, properly hardened stainless steel heads and premium hardwood handles that define every Fretz hammer.

The Fretz HMR-405 PrecisionSmith Small Embossing Hammer features a 220mm (8-5/8") handle and a 63mm (2-1/2") hammer head. The hardened stainless steel heads are polished to perfection, and the rosewood handles carry a special finish that feels exceptionally comfortable in hand. About Embossing

According to Bill Fretz: Embossing is the stretching of metal by hammering from the inside. Bocking is a form of embossing when the metal is hammered into a cavity. Free-form embossing is done with a sandbag. The embossing hammer is used to dome metal from the inside — the metal is stretched as it is supported on a sandbag or a depression carved in wood. Doming a piece of metal before raising makes it easier to control because the shape becomes rigid. The embossing hammer also leaves a very interesting dimpled texture on flat and slightly domed metal when hammering on the outside of a form against a stake. The size of the hammer is dictated by the size of the work.
