The Fretz HMR-417 PrecisionSmith Chasing Hammer is a scaled-down interpretation of the classic Fretz chasing hammer, engineered for jewelers who demand exceptional control during fine detail chasing work. While it shares the same 8-1/2" overall length as the original Fretz chasing hammer, the PrecisionSmith distinguishes itself with a dramatically slimmer pistol grip — approximately 40% thinner at 5/8" compared to the 1-1/8" grip of the standard model. The handle narrows further to just 3/8" at its thinnest point, a profile previously found only in rare custom-made handles crafted during traditional apprenticeships. Turned from select Padauk wood, the handle combines refined ergonomics with the toughness and flexibility required for sustained chasing sessions.
The hammer head is precision-crafted from highly polished 420 stainless steel and hardened to 50rc on the Rockwell scale. The slightly domed larger face measures 21.3mm in diameter, while the smaller ball end measures approximately 9.3mm. Because all Fretz hammer heads are hand-finished, measurements may vary slightly from hammer to hammer. The head length is 50mm, and the head weighs 1.8 oz. (51g), striking a careful balance between responsive feedback and control.
Whether you are a working bench jeweler, a metalsmith specializing in repoussé, or a detail-oriented chasing artist, the HMR-417 delivers the refined performance that has made Fretz hammers a staple in professional studios worldwide.
