The Fretz HMR-9 Rounded Wide Raising/Embossing Hammer is part of the original Fretz Jewelers Hammer line — the most popular series in the growing Fretz family. Sized between the smaller Precisionsmith and larger Silversmithing hammers, Fretz Jewelers hammers strike the ideal balance for a wide range of metalsmithing tasks.
The wider, longer profile of the No. 9 makes it ideal for blocking bowls and broader-width strips into concave shapes. As with all embossing hammers, this hammer is intended to stretch metal from the inside.
Raising is the compression of metal down to the stake without stretching it — the trick is to angle the metal off the stake so that there is an air gap for compression. Embossing is the stretching of metal by hammering from the inside. Blocking is a form of embossing when metal is hammered into a cavity; freeform embossing is done with a sandbag.
