This medium-size European natural charcoal block is imported from Poland and crafted from solid, knot-free hardwood that has been specially treated for prolonged use. Measuring 5-1/2" x 2-3/4" x 1-1/4" (140mm x 70mm x 30mm), it is an essential soldering surface for jewelers and metalsmiths. Charcoal blocks create a reducing atmosphere during soldering, reflecting heat back onto the workpiece and making the torch flame more effective and efficient.

This block is compatible with the metal charcoal block holder (154.150B) once it has been wrapped with binding wire and heat cured. Wrapping the block with binding wire before use helps it maintain its shape as it shrinks over time with repeated heating.

Charcoal blocks must be wrapped with binding wire and heat cured before use. Charcoal blocks will shrink with use — this is normal. Search online for videos demonstrating the many ways to properly prepare a charcoal block.

Moisture Warning: Charcoal naturally absorbs moisture from the air. A block stored in a high-humidity environment can crack when high heat is applied, as trapped moisture tries to escape. Before using a new block or any block that has been exposed to humidity, follow these steps to remove moisture:

1. Gently heat a burner on your stove and warm a cast iron pan or similar heavy pan.
2. Place the charcoal block in the pan.
3. Observe the block for escaping steam.
4. Once steaming stops, the moisture has been removed and the block is ready to prepare for use.

Store charcoal blocks in a cool, dry place when not in use.
