Natural Charcoal Blocks

These soft natural charcoal blocks are made from solid, knot-free hardwood and specially treated to help prolong their working life. Charcoal blocks create a reducing atmosphere during soldering and reflect heat back onto the piece being worked, making the flame more effective and efficient. The soft composition readily accepts pins to hold items in place while you work, and wrapping the block with binding wire helps it maintain its shape through repeated use.

Moisture Warning: Charcoal naturally absorbs moisture from the air. A block stored in a humid environment—near the ocean or in an area with seasonal humidity—can crack when high heat is applied as that trapped moisture escapes. Before first use, and any time the block has been exposed to humidity, follow this moisture-removal process:

1. Gently heat a cast iron pan or similar heavy pan on a stove burner.
2. Place the charcoal block in the pan.
3. Observe the block for escaping steam until steaming stops.
4. The block is now dry and ready for use.

Before use: Charcoal blocks must be wrapped with binding wire and heat cured before use. Store blocks in a cool, dry place when not in use. Note that charcoal blocks will shrink with use over time. Search online for videos demonstrating the many methods for preparing and curing a charcoal block for use.
