The Swiss Torch Compressed Air Casting Head (model 246.1) is designed for use with compressed air and gas — not oxygen. This is a head-only component, intended for attachment to the Swiss Torch Body 114.109. It is stamped D-2bar on the head, where "D" stands for Druckluft, the German word for compressed air.
Using compressed air instead of pure oxygen offers several practical advantages for casting. The flame produced is larger and bushier, providing full crucible coverage and reducing the oxidation risk associated with pure oxygen/gas melts. While a compressed air flame burns at a lower temperature than a pure oxygen flame, it delivers more than sufficient heat for casting applications. This approach is widely used in European jewelry and metalsmithing workshops.
For best results, use with propane. Natural gas does not burn as hot and will most likely require a natural gas booster to achieve adequate temperatures.
