The Kagan Ring Reducing Plate is a double-sided, smoothly polished steel plate designed to reduce the size of plain round precious metal wedding bands when used with the Kagan ring stretcher and reducing tool. With 6 holes per side and two different tapers, this single plate delivers 12 working choices for a range of ring outside diameters. The polished finish helps prevent marring on gold and platinum bands during the reducing process.
Each side of the plate shares the same hole diameters, but the tapers differ—giving the jeweler flexibility for different band profiles and reduction goals. The largest hole, at 27mm outside diameter, is suited to reduce a U.S. size 13–14 plain domed band of medium weight by a full size. Note that the outside diameter of the ring—not the ring size—is the limiting factor when selecting the appropriate hole.
This reducing plate is also widely used by metalsmiths for making coin rings with ball bearings. Video tutorials demonstrating this technique are available on YouTube.
