Boulder Opal is found exclusively in Queensland, Australia, where veins and patches of precious opal form within rugged brown ironstone boulders. These gems developed over millions of years as rainwater dissolved silica from the earth's surface and deposited it into natural cavities within the ironstone. The result is a stone of exceptional durability — the ironstone backing provides natural reinforcement that makes Boulder Opal more resistant to cracks and fractures compared to other opal varieties.
This 10mm x 8mm oval cabochon falls within the Some Opalescence grade, meaning each stone contains at least a flash of opalescence across its surface. The opalescence covers approximately 1–5% of the gemstone's surface, with a primary hue range of purples and greens. Each stone's pattern is entirely unique, heightened by its individual opalescent display. The rough for these stones originated near the city of Cunnamulla, Queensland.
Sold by the piece. Because each Boulder Opal is a one-of-a-kind natural gemstone, color distribution, pattern, and opalescent intensity will vary from stone to stone.
