Description

The Durston 1002 Hobby 80 Economy Rolling Mill is engineered to deliver reliable performance and lasting durability at an accessible price point. Developed specifically to give jewelers and beginners a quality entry-level option, this mill stands apart from crude, heavy economy imports by combining intelligent design with Durston's commitment to precision manufacturing.

As standard, the Hobby 80 is equipped with 80mm flat rollers for a generous flat rolling surface suited to a wide range of jewelry projects. When paired with the optional additional roller (not included — see part no. 128.8099), the mill can also produce D-shaped and triangular wire profiles with exceptional precision. The one-piece cast iron frame provides unmatched strength and stability, while the lightweight design reduces shipping costs and makes the mill easier to move around the shop — a clear advantage over heavier India-made economy alternatives.

Wish I found Otto Frei sooner!!

Wish I had found Otto Frei sooner!! I would have purchased the vast majority of equipment I’ve purchased the last few years from them. I am absolutely amazed by the quality of the rolling mill I just received. Finally I have a supplier that supports the jeweler and the jewelry trade with tools and equipment that will last my lifetime and the next jeweler that acquires them when I can no longer produce. They have earned another lifetime customer with their products, customer service and attention to detail.

Durston Hobby 80

Just received this Durston 80 rolling mill. It’s a great product. Perfect for my studio. Same quality as larger mills that I have used in studio classes. Will likely buy optional roller, at later time

Can you buy two additional d type rollers to make a fully round profile wire?

OttoFrei.com

Sorry no that will not work. The upper rolls and lower rolls are different. The lower roll has a longer shaft.

How wide are the rollers? Can you use texture plates or do you need to use texture paper? Are the rollers easy to change?

OttoFrei.com

The rolls are 80mm (3.15") wide. Yes you can use metal texture plates. The top roll (the only one that is meant to be changed) requires a few common tools to change out. Hex keys for removing the top bolts and the plastic side covers, long nose pliers or circlip pliers for removing circlips on the adjuster T handle and the main handle. Durston now has a video showing texturing techniques that can be used with the flat mill. Videos showing dismantling are in the works. https://durston.com/product/hobby-80/

What kind of base does this rolling machine require?

OttoFrei.com

You will need to mount on a table top/workbench. Durston does not currently have a rolling mill stand that will fit the Hobby 80 without some modifications, as in drilling new holes in the stand top.

What is the maximum thickness it can roll?

OttoFrei.com

Durston has yet to publish the maximum, but based on the size and the simplicity of the Hobby mill, we would estimate the safe maximum to be 2mm. You can always go larger, but with any gear driven mill, as you go larger you are putting more strain on the outer edges of the gears. The maximum thickness also depends on the hardness of the material. At some point you can break a tooth on the gears.
