Use the non-hardened blank tip when you want to grind and shape your own profile.

Factory guidance for hardening or re-tempering tips after modification:

1. Hardening: Hold the tip by the threaded section with tweezers. Heat the working end with a blowlamp to about 820 °C (light cherry red), then quench tip-first into an oil bath.
2. Clean: Remove oil with fine abrasive paper, avoiding contact with the point.
3. Tempering: Pass the piece from back to front over the blowlamp to about 130 °C, making sure the color does not change, then quench in oil. If overheated and the tip loses its edge quickly, repeat the process from the hardening step.
