Cultured Freshwater Half-Drilled Rose Pearl

From ancient China, where pearls were believed to protect against fire and dragons, to Europe, where they symbolized modesty and purity, pearls have been treasured for centuries. Cultured pearls are the result of the intentional insertion of a bead or piece of tissue, which the mollusk then coats with successive layers of nacre. Most pearls also exhibit an iridescent phenomenon known as orient. Cultured freshwater pearls are grown in freshwater lakes and ponds and produce a wide range of shapes, sizes, and colors, with China and the United States among the leading sources.
