From ancient China, where pearls were believed to protect against fire and dragons, to Europe, where they symbolized modesty and purity, pearls have been treasured for centuries. Cultured pearls form when a bead or small piece of mantle tissue is intentionally placed inside a mollusk, which then coats it with layer upon layer of nacre. Many pearls display a soft iridescent glow known as orient.
Cultured Freshwater Pearls are grown in lakes and ponds and are admired for their wide variety of shapes, sizes, and natural colors. China and the United States are among the leading sources for freshwater pearl cultivation.
