*MEASURING FLUORESCENT LAMPS DIAMETER
The designation T8 means T for "Tubular" and the number 8 for "1 inch diameter".  Tubes with the designation T6 are 6/8" in diameter (3/4" or 19 mm).  T5 tubes are 5/8 in diameter and so on.  The smaller the diameter of the fluorescent tube, the more efficient the tube is in consuming watts.

 
**MEASURING FLUORESCENT LAMPS LENGTH
To determine the length of a fluorescent lamp, you do not measure the bulb. The normal length of the bulb is the measurement from the back of the socket on the fixture. The actual bulb length including pins for this bulb is 17-13/16".
