Measuring Fluorescent Lamp Diameter: The designation T8 refers to the tube type and diameter — "T" for tubular and "8" for 1 inch in diameter (measured in eighths of an inch). For reference, T6 tubes are 6/8" (3/4" or 19 mm) in diameter, and T5 tubes are 5/8" in diameter. Smaller-diameter fluorescent tubes are generally more efficient in watt consumption.
