GRS 044-504 C-Max Burin Graver & Handle Kit

The GRS 044-504 C-Max Burin Graver & Handle Kit is a complete hand engraving solution built around GRS C-Max tungsten carbide — a premium carbide grade engineered to hold a razor-sharp edge far longer than conventional graver materials. This burin is designed specifically for hand engraving, with a particular focus on intaglio printmaking. Whether you are an experienced engraver or picking up a graver for the first time, this kit delivers a ready-to-use tool that is precision-ground and immediately functional straight out of the box.

The burin blank measures 0.125" (3.17mm) in diameter and approximately 3" (75mm) in length. Two ground reference surfaces on the top front of the burin form a 90° square edge, providing a consistent clamping surface compatible with most GRS sharpening fixtures for accurate resharpening. The front face is ground at a 35° face angle, with a 15° relief face behind it. Both sides of the burin are thinned with a 2.5° relief surface ground approximately 0.6" (15mm) long, reducing drag and improving cutting performance.

The heel features two flat ground surfaces approximately 0.25" (6mm) long at a 12° elevation angle, forming a 100° included V-point — creating a slightly wider point than a traditional square graver for enhanced control and versatility.

The included GRS adjustable graver handle allows you to dial in your preferred burin extension length. Simply loosen the two set screws, slide the burin to the desired position, and re-tighten. Because C-Max carbide is extremely hard, it requires a diamond abrasive for sharpening — standard abrasive wheels are not suitable for this material.

• C-Max tungsten carbide can only be sharpened using diamond abrasives such as GRS diamond wheels used with the Power Hone system; standard abrasive wheels will not sharpen this material.
