Machinist files (also called Engineers files) are made to a different standard than Jewelers Precision files. Cuts and shapes are different. A Machinist file Bastard cut (marked 1) is coarser than a jewelers file marked 1. A Machinist file will have slightly different dimensions than a Jewelers Precision file. Lengths on Machinist files are measured from the top or point of the file to the point when the tang begins to angle up to the heel. Lengths on Jewelers Precision files are measured from the top or point of the file to the point where the heel begins to angle down to the heel.
