Product Details

For the first time in generations, a complete, professionally designed chasing and repoussé tool collection is available through a top tool distributor. The Nechamkin Complete Tool Kit brings together all five Nechamkin tool sets into one master collection — representing years of development by Liza Nechamkin, a professional chaser who drew direct inspiration from her personal antique collection of over 2,000 individual chasing and repoussé tools previously belonging to generations of Tiffany & Co. and Gorham chasers.

Best accounts suggest the last time a set of this type was available commercially was the mid-19th century. These tools are formed from W1 tool steel with tips heat treated in a controlled environment to ensure consistent Rockwell hardness. The 4.25" (108mm) shanks are square-stock for precision and control superior to round, with chamfered corners and a satin finish for comfort in hand. All tool faces are precisely shaped and polished for smooth travel across metalwork, with long, balanced tapers for excellent sight lines down to the working face. As Liza Nechamkin states: "These tools are made to very precise specifications within extremely close tolerances. They are expertly crafted for grace and balance. I personally final polish and inspect each one. A substandard tool will never leave my workbench."

The general range of chasing styles these tools are best suited for falls within the realm of Western-style jewelry and silver chasing — low to moderately high relief work outlined from the front, embossed with repoussé, then final chased and modeled, as seen in the renowned 19th and early 20th century work of Tiffany & Co., Gorham, Kirk Steiff, and Danish silversmith Georg Jensen.

Notes

  • Always wear eye protection when using these tools. Regularly file or grind off any mushrooming at the striking end to prevent injury.
  • A fine lacquer coat is applied at the factory to inhibit rust during storage; this will wear during use. Keep tools clean, dry, and stored in their container. Lightly coat with machine oil for extended storage.
  • Remove minor rust with steel wool, fine sandpaper, or a coarse synthetic scrubby pad. Maintain polished faces with green rouge or steel polish on a small soft buff — do not over-polish.
  • For slight reshaping without destroying temper, use a 3M light deburring wheel or medium grit emery paper, then a compressed felt buff and steel polish. Do not allow the tool to become hot.
  • Modifying these tools voids their warranty and should only be attempted by experienced metalsmiths.
