Product Details

The Nechamkin Complete Tool Kit with Hammer brings together every Nechamkin tool set into one definitive master collection — the most comprehensive entry point into Liza Nechamkin's celebrated line of professional chasing and repousse tools, now including the Nechamkin Otto Frei Chasing Hammer.

For years, students and professionals worked without an accessible source for ready-to-use chasing tools. Best accounts suggest the last time a set of this type was available commercially was the mid-19th century. Liza Nechamkin changed that. Inspired by her personal collection of over 2,000 antique chasing and repousse tools formerly belonging to generations of Tiffany & Co. and Gorham chasers, she developed these sets over several years to bring back properly designed, well-made tools through a professional distributor. "I have not made an improved chasing and repousse tool or invented a new one. I have simply brought back a great thing from the past." — Liza Nechamkin

All Nechamkin tools are formed from W1 tool steel with tips heat-treated in a controlled environment for consistent Rockwell hardness. The 4.25" (108mm) square shanks feature chamfered corners and a satin finish for comfort and superior control. All tool faces are precisely shaped and polished for smooth travel across metalwork, with long, balanced tapers for excellent sightlines to the working face. "These tools are made to very precise specifications within extremely close tolerances. I personally final polish and inspect each one. A substandard tool will never leave my workbench." — Liza Nechamkin

Notes

  • ALWAYS WEAR EYE PROTECTION when using chasing tools. Mushrooming at the striking end should be filed or ground off regularly.
  • A fine lacquer coat is applied to inhibit rust during storage; it will wear with use. Store tools clean, dry, and in their container. Apply a light coat of machine oil for extended storage.
  • Remove minor rust with steel wool, fine sandpaper, or a synthetic scrubby pad. Maintain working face polish with green rouge or steel polish on a soft buff — do not over-polish.
  • Modifying these tools voids the warranty and should only be attempted by experienced metalsmiths.
  • These tools are best suited for Western-style jewelry and silver chasing — the tradition of low to moderately high relief work as practiced by Tiffany & Co., Gorham, Kirk Steiff, and George Jensen.
