Made in the USA by Liza Nechamkin in small batches, Nechamkin Organic Pine Rosin Green Chaser’s Pitch follows the proven formula developed by metal sculptor Debra Montgomery. This natural, pine-based pitch is favored by blacksmiths, sculptors, armorers, and jewelers for medium to high relief work. It can be worked slightly warm with a heat gun; keep it a bit warmer for deeper repoussé and a bit cooler for crisper planishing. In cold conditions, the pitch will release the metal.

Key Features

  • Organic pine rosin formulation: Traditional “real” pitch feel—adhesive when cool, pliable when warmed.
  • Balanced working range: Tunable with light heat for medium to high relief; cool for firmer planishing support.
  • Studio-made quality: Mixed in small batches in Nechamkin’s studio using the licensed Debra Montgomery recipe.
  • Sold in 5 lb increments: Order enough to fill your bowl and keep extra on hand for replenishing.

How Much Do I Need?

  • 8" × 4" pitch bowl typically takes ~5–7 lb depending on whether you prefer the surface mounded or flush.

Basic Use

  1. Place pitch in a suitable pitch bowl and warm gently—many shops use a 250–300 °F oven for even softening.
  2. Seat your work while the surface is pliable; allow to cool until firm before striking.
  3. To remove, re-warm slightly so the piece lifts cleanly; wipe away residues while warm.

Bench Tips & Setup Resources

  • Pitch bowl setup: Many chasers prefer full hemispherical 8" bowls for maximum tilt and control, often weighted in the base and used with a stabilizing ring. See the attached PDF, Setting Up a Pitch Bowl, for a step-by-step guide (preferred bowl types, weighting with concrete, safe heating with a hot-air gun, and avoiding bubbling/overheating). :contentReference[oaicite:0]{index=0}
  • Best practices: A good pine-resin pitch should grip when cool, soften evenly, and be workable by heat gun; avoid heating to the point of bubbling or smoking. For an expert overview, see Charles Lewton-Brain’s review (Silversmithing.com).

Notes

  • This is a natural product; minor batch-to-batch variation in color/firmness is normal.
  • Always wear eye protection when working with hot pitch and ensure good ventilation.
