Start chasing and repoussé the right way. This kit pairs the popular 8″ × 4″ deep cast iron pitch bowl with a proper rubber pad and 5 lb of Nechamkin’s Organic Pine Rosin Green Chaser’s Pitch (Made in USA). Tuned for medium–high relief work, the green pitch softens with gentle heat for forming, and firms up for crisp planishing.

Why This Kit

  • Ready to work: Correct bowl, pad, and quality pitch—no guesswork.
  • Tunable support: Keep pitch slightly warmer for deeper repoussé; cooler for firmer planishing support.
  • Traditional “real” pitch: Organic pine rosin–based (not asphaltum); grips when cool, softens evenly when warmed.

How to Use

  1. Place pitch into the bowl and warm gently—many shops use a 250–300 °F oven for even softening. (See attached PDF: Setting Up a Pitch Bowl.)
  2. Seat your work while the surface is pliable; allow to cool until firm before striking.
  3. For deeper repoussé, keep the pitch warmer; for crisper planishing and flat chasing, work it a bit cooler.
  4. To release the piece, re-warm slightly and lift; wipe residues while warm, then complete clean-up per shop practice.

Bench Tips & Safety

  • Setup guidance: The attached PDF, Setting Up a Pitch Bowl, covers bowl weighting, safe heating with a hot-air gun, and tilt control for workflow.
  • What good pitch does: Grips when cool, softens through (not just on the surface), and should not be overheated to bubbling/smoking. For an expert overview of pitch behavior and safety, see Charles Lewton-Brain’s review on Silversmithing.com.
  • Always wear eye protection and ensure good ventilation when working warm/hot pitch.
