Compact, shallow setup for jewelry-scale chasing & repoussé. This kit pairs a 6-1/4″ × 7/8″ cast iron pitch bowl with the matching rubber pad and 5 lb of Nechamkin Medium Green Pitch (organic pine rosin–based, Made in USA). The medium-green pitch softens with gentle heat for forming and firms for crisp chasing and light planishing.

Kit Contents

SKU Item Key Details
125.400 Cast Iron Pitch Bowl Approx. 6-1/4″ diameter × 7/8″ deep (shallow profile for fine work)
125.455 Rubber Pad for Small Shallow Bowl Properly sized pad increases stability and protects the bench
125.288 Nechamkin Medium Green Pitch 5 lb organic pine rosin–based pitch

Why This Kit

  • Ready to work: Correct bowl + pad + quality pitch—no guesswork.
  • Tunable support: Keep pitch slightly warmer for deeper repoussé; a bit cooler for firmer, crisper chasing.
  • Natural “real” pitch: Pine rosin–based (not asphaltum); grips when cool and softens evenly when warmed.

Setup & Use (see attached PDF: Setting Up a Pitch Bowl)

  1. Weight the bowl base with concrete for stability and to conserve pitch. Before the concrete sets, press a few finger depressions into it so the pitch can key in securely. (PDF covers bowl weighting and base prep.)
  2. Break pitch into small chunks; warm gradually—many shops use a 250–300 °F oven for even softening. A hot-air gun also works; keep the heat moving to avoid hot spots. (PDF includes safe-heating guidance.)
  3. Warm the surface until pliable; seat the metal and allow to cool until firm before striking. To release, re-warm slightly and lift; wipe residues while warm.

Good Practice & Safety (Silversmithing.com)

  • A quality pine-resin pitch should grip when cool, soften through (not just on the surface), and must never be heated to bubbling or smoke. Always wear eye protection and ensure good ventilation. For an expert overview, see Charles Lewton-Brain’s Silversmiths Pitch Review.

Notes

  • Natural product: Minor batch-to-batch variation in color/firmness is normal.
  • Nechamkin Green Pitch can be worked slightly warm (heat gun) and will release in colder conditions.
