Emerald is considered the world's finest green gemstone and has been highly prized and coveted for centuries, from Cleopatra to European royalty. A member of the beryl family, fine-quality emerald is limited in availability and remains one of the most sought-after gemstones in the trade. Nearly all emeralds contain inclusions visible to the naked eye — a characteristic so common it carries its own trade term: Jardin, used to describe the mossy, garden-like internal inclusions. The majority of emeralds are also treated, with fractures filled with colorless oil to enhance color and overall appearance. These oval faceted genuine emeralds display a medium-light to medium green color with moderate eye-visible inclusions, consistent with natural emerald character. Care for these stones by cleaning with warm, soapy water only. Avoid ultrasonic and steam cleaners, which can damage the oiling treatment.
