Opal is the world's most popular phenomenal gemstone, with many cultures believing that opals had supernatural origins and power. Inside each opal, sub-microscopic spheres are stacked in a grid-like pattern — similar to a layer of ping pong balls. When light strikes these spheres, the waves bend and break into spectral colors, producing a flash of rainbow colors known as play-of-color. These oval cabochons feature a translucent white background with medium to strong play-of-color, making them a striking choice for fine jewelry settings.
White opal displays its characteristic play-of-color against a white to semi-translucent body. Color flashes range across blue, green, and red. These stones are offered in a range of standard oval cabochon sizes, suitable for a variety of bezel, prong, and collet settings.
Important: Opal is an exceptionally soft and moisture-sensitive stone. It must never be cleaned with an ultrasonic cleaner or steam cleaner, and should be protected from prolonged exposure to dry conditions to prevent crazing.
