Agate is a type of chalcedony characterized by curved and angular bands of color that vary in hue and transparency. From patterns of lace, moss, and branches to entire landscapes of deserts and forests, agate is a unique and diverse gemstone. Agate typically forms inside gas cavities within volcanic rocks, with its characteristic banding resulting from growth layers that follow the contours of those cavities.
Moss Agate owes its distinctive appearance to inclusions of dark greenish chlorite mineral, which create the branching, moss-like patterns visible within the stone. Each cabochon is semi-transparent to translucent, displaying medium to dark green inclusions against a pale base — no two stones are identical. These cabochons are offered untreated and are an excellent choice for open-back settings in handcrafted jewelry.
Care instructions: Clean with warm, soapy water only. Avoid ultrasonic and steam cleaners.
