Oval Millgrain tools are used by stone setters to dress up or decorate stone settings. Round Millgrain tools are also availalbe but Oval Millgrain tools have always been more popular. The effect of the small, uniform depressions made by a Millgrain wheel helps make the stone look larger and brighter. Not to be confused with the larger decorative tools commonly used on a lathe for making the decorative edge of a wedding band, these stone setting Millgrain tools are extremely small and would be of very little help for such a use. The difference between size # 1, which measures approximately .35 mm across, and the largest size #15, which measures approximately .65 mm, is only .30mm. That makes the difference between the sizes approximately. 02 mm. (We say approximately because they are so difficult to measure.)
