Moonstone is a member of the feldspar group mineral orthoclase, consisting of alternating layers of the minerals albite and orthoclase. When light falls between these layers, it scatters and appears to roll or billow across the gem, creating a phenomenon known as adularescence. This milky, luminous sheen so closely resembles the effect of moonlight that Hindu mythology held moonstone to be made of moonbeams and a bringer of good luck. While moonstone most commonly appears colorless, white, or bluish gray, it also occurs in warm tones such as peach, yellow, and brown.
