How to Use a Disc Cutter

  1. Place the disc cutter on top of a rubber pad for support.
  2. Apply a cutting lubricant, such as Stay Sharp, to lubricate the cutting edges of the punch.
  3. Use a suitable mallet — never a nail-driving hammer. A brass mallet is recommended.
  4. Always support the opposite side of the cutter with a sheet of the same diameter metal you are cutting. This keeps upper and lower parts in alignment and helps minimize material sticking.
  5. Do not exceed the maximum recommended thickness for your disc cutter.
  6. Only cut soft non-ferrous metals such as brass, copper, silver, and gold.
  7. Ensure cutting edges are facing down before use.
  8. To prevent rust, keep the disc cutter lubricated between uses and store in a dry location.
  9. Using a 95 durometer urethane pad is recommended to extend the life of the cutters.

starting to use the 5 piece disc cutter

I have cut a 1/2" disc of copper and a 5/8" disc of brass so far. I don't have the urethane pad, so I set it on a rubber drink coaster. I don't have a weighted brass mallet, so I used a weighted rubber mallet, a dead blow plastic mallet and a small copper hammer. I didn't have the 'Stay Sharp', so I used beeswax. I used a shim. One piece got stuck, probably because it shifted between blows, but I got it out. its top side looks OK. I assume I'll get better with time. :)

Can I cut 20 ga. bronze with this disc cutter?

OttoFrei.com

This economical disc cutter set is used to produced round disks of metal from soft precious metals such as gold or silver up to 20 gauge thick. Other jewelry metals such as copper, brass, and nickel silver can also be cut using care and common sense. Bronze is a very hard metal and may not perform well unless proper care is taken. A test should be run on a well-annealed thinner gauge piece first.

Can I use a rubber mallet or a weighted plastic mallet? For the lubricant, can I use bees'wax?

OttoFrei.com

You will want to use a weighted mallet such as a brass mallet to ensure that the blows have the proper force to push the punches through the metal. We recommend a cutting lubricant such as Stay Sharp or similar over beeswax.
