Iolite takes its name from the Greek word for violet, and it earns that distinction with a vivid violet-blue color that immediately draws the eye. What makes iolite truly remarkable among gemstones is its strong pleochroism — the optical phenomenon where the stone displays distinctly different colors depending on the viewing angle. Rotate an iolite and you may observe violet, gray, or yellow hues shifting through the stone. Historically, this unique optical property was employed by Viking navigators to locate the position of the sun on overcast days, effectively using the stone as a polarizing lens for wayfinding.
These round faceted genuine iolites are offered in a medium to medium-dark violet-blue color range and are eye-clean, making them well-suited for setting in fine jewelry. They are untreated, with no color or clarity enhancements of any kind.
Care is important with iolite. Avoid ultrasonic and steam cleaners. Clean with warm soapy water only, and keep the stones away from heat, chemicals, scratches, and hard blows.
