Known as the King of Gems in Sanskrit, ruby is one of the most desired and valuable gemstones, prized as far back as biblical times. Ruby is the most valuable variety of corundum and commands the highest per-carat price of any colored stone. The trace element chromium is responsible for ruby's characteristic color, which ranges from orangy red to purplish red. Pure, vivid red to slightly purplish red is considered the most desirable and highest-valued color.
These round genuine ruby cabochons are translucent to opaque with a medium pinkish red color. Some eye-visible inclusions are to be expected, as inclusion-free rubies are exceptionally rare. Color zoning may be present in some stones. Heat treatment is standard practice and consistent with industry norms—nearly all rubies available today undergo some form of heat treatment.
To clean, use warm soapy water. Ultrasonic and steam cleaning is generally considered safe for heat-treated rubies.
